Review: “Profane Rites For Cursed Times” by Pvrgatorii

Is there a better way to describe Pvrgatorii that f***ing hostile? A Spanish duo who hail from the vibrant city of Barcelona started the project back in 2018 and have consistently defined their sound as “Black Metal ov Death” a violently turbulent fusion of raw Black Metal abrasions, Hardcore Punk urgency and noise-laden Deathgrind hostility. Their music satisfies with its immediate aggression in situations where violence is the only answer, their sonic tones a breeding ground for lyricism that bleeds on esoteric, anti-human and spiritual anarchy laced themes. Over a pair of albums in 2021’s “Con Las Uñas Clavadas En La Cara De Dios” and 2024’s “Marching Through Thee Night Guided by a Black Fire” they have proven themselves to be a dark force of nature, unwilling to compromise for anything or anyone and now they return with “Profane Rites For Cursed Times”.

Recorded at the infamous Dvngeon of Llull in early December 2025 by the band themselves, the new record is very much the Pandora’s box full of sharp objects just waiting to escape and scratch out your eyes. “Key To Thee Temple” is the fire burns the bridge to light the way, a brief introduction providing a false sense of security before the feral rampage takes control, Blackened Crust Punk riffs and demonic screams conjoined to restless and relentless percussion that gives the ear drums a savage beating. The opening cut feels like the culmination of everything the duo have striven to create, an occult ritual of bloody violence of the highest order. Blood gargling vocals continue into “Dystopian Flesh Arise“, the riffs driven by more traditional Black Metal before the over-driven mid-section which feels like insanity calling from the depths of the abyss. As the furious fires of hell burn this world, the duo stand at the gates with evil grins, waiting for the next opportunity to strike fear into the hearts of us mere mortals.

There is no time for breath during the violent delight that is “Hermetik Axis“, the high octane affair playing out at the tempo of the damned with riffs from calloused hands making the fret boards smoulder. The drums are absolutely insane, often times hitting that point at which you feel they must be performed by a machine because they’re so fast and precise but in truth someone of flesh and bone is sweating away feverishly. The duo prefer the rhythmic assault as their weapon of choice, the metaphorical equivalent of being hit in the face by a concrete slab over and over again and “A Broken Seal For Final Capitalism Collapse” is a mighty fine example of that. Chord changes feel like being attacked by sharp objects at speed, the death growled vocals of spitting, snarling venom a demonstration of prowess from a rabid dog. Burn baby burn, disco inferno!
