Review: “Mob Mentality” by Autumn Lies Buried

A five piece Deathcore wrecking ball hailing from Clarksville Tennessee, armed to the teeth with sharp objects, Death Metal riffs and Metalcore breakdowns, Autumn Lies Buried are known for keeping everything raw and driven. Their high energy incendiary live performances earned them their reputation and more than 2.6 million Spotify streams alone for singles “Brothel” and “F*** Around and Find Out” from 2019 EP “Delusion of the New World Kings” adds weight to that gravity. Like the crew of the USS Enterprise, they have an ongoing mission: to deliver aggressive, socially conscious music with a cathartic edge and they’re never afraid to ink a call to arms against injustice. So three years after their debut album “Aristocracy” what does “Mob Mentality” have to offer?

If you were expecting anything other than a shotgun blast of an opening cut then guess again because menacing, groove laden guitars smash their way through prison walls as vocalist Kaelin Wilkins launches a vicious tirade of an opening verse. Punchy and aggressive, it’s exactly what you might expect from a glance at the cover art before the script gets flipped with a sample and a hip-hop verse. That doesn’t stop the rhythmic pounding for a second though, the brutal screams once again rising from the ashes as Natalie McKay of Michigan Deathcore brutes Realms Of Sheol delivers a throat splitting verse. Never afraid to mix up the vocal styles “Blood Money” brings more rap vocals and the guitars bounce before Wilkins gets guttural and nasty with it, homicide on his mind. The bass from Marcus Nettles rumbles as tectonic plates start to shift, the weight of the sound enough to move mountains. Socially and politically aware “Guillotine” slaps hard with thought provoking lyrics about rooting out the corrupt with blast beats galore from Cole Hill. Reaching into the void of Slam, a brutal roar before the final verse is the push to make you move before a violently turbulent mosh part brings it home in style. A guest vocal appearance from Dustin Jamaal Mitchell of Filth graces the audio violence that “Told Off Witta Sawed Off“, a gang chant of “f*** you!” early on a moment of magic. The pacing is electric, sending a chill down the spine as the band elevate a Metallic Hardcore structure into Deathcore territory with vim and vigour, putting their backs into it and pulling out Kublai Khan vibes in the process. The final onslaught is the crushing “Debt Of Silence” which churns and burns from the very start, tight polyrhythms tearing a hole in the fabric of time and space to create urgent leads after some serious blood gargling from Wilkins. It has to be said that Cane Potter’s guitar work is more involved on this one, something which pushes the whole thing to a new realm of pain for the eardrums to endure… [8/10]
