NEWS: Varmia bring out the dead!
Polish Black Metal act Varmia have warned of a new album on horizon with “Zwykli Zmarli” (translated as “ordinary dead”), their first new music since 2023’s album “Nie Nas Widze”. A darkened track of raw, primal Black Metal that still clings to the bands Baltic roots by adding in percussion and traditional instrumentation, it leaves us to contemplate the sounds of tagelharpa, goat horn, wood tuba and krivula which previously graced their music…
Lasota comments: “’Zwykli Zmarli’ is a song to honor those who are no longer a part of our flesh-realm, but still wander amongst us. Our ancestors, the Old Prussians, said farewell to the departed by putting the dressed up dead body inside the household and feasting around it, like it was still an ordinary inmate. A version of that custom was not that long ago alive in some of our houses, here in northern and eastern Poland. A rite transformed by the time and culture, but its essence remained. On November 1st we connect with the world beyond, trying to find the thread that would help us to join with the departed. This song is our vocal attempt to create that link. This is a song from the new album, coming once again via M-Theory Audio in Spring 2026. The video contains glimpses of the album recordings that took place in Zamek Kapituły Warmińskiej in the town of Pieniężno. We recorded this one live as well, amongst these historic ruins. They are an essential part of our identity.”
