Vs Tuesday: One Song! Two Bands! Who Wins?! FIGHT! Black Hole Sun.

Who remembers cassette tape trading to check out new sounds back in the day? Someone once put a copy of “Superunknown” by Soundgarden back 1995 into these grubby paws in exchange for “Ride The Lightning” by Metallica and the rest is history. Arguably the finest 74 minutes the Seattle Washington Grunge band created, it spawned five singles and the epic “Black Hole Sun” is today’s choice of song most recently covered.

It’s never easy to take on an iconic song as a cover, take it too close to the original and people slate you for not making it your own, take it too far away and people say you’ve ruined it. So this pair of cuts are equally about putting the artists own spin on things as they are about paying tribute to the late Chris Cornell. May he rest in peace. In the Red Corner we have Transport League who recorded their version as the first new material since “A Million Volt Scream” with Robert “Rob Guz” Ritchiesse in the X-Gene Studio. We’ve loved those dudes since “Satanic Panic” and they do a fine job. In the Blue Corner we have Incubus who finished out their set at the annual ‘KROQ Weenie Roast‘ in Carson, California back in 2017 with a cover of the song. Who wins? You decide.
