Review: “Origin” by Devourist

Hailing from Columbia, Missouri and forming in 2015, Devourist are a quartet that like to combine Death and Groove Metal like the left jab followed by the right hook of a heavy weight prize fighter. As the cover art created by Adam Serrano and adorning their latest offering “Origin” depicts, they have a love of Science Fiction and their preferred themes are of the total annihilation of the human race at the hands of an all consuming Alien species. Recorded at Sigma Studio in Jefferson City, Missouri by Todd McVicker with Lionsnake Productions, this record could just be the taste of bloody things to come, although interestingly they have cut December 2019 single “In Vivo” adrift as standalone…

…Name checking the EP title in the opening line of “Wake of the Catalyst“, a track with some moments of vicious intent that also manages to spare a few moments for some swirling dark moods of nauseating melody. The Groove is intense, the vocals throat shredding and the there is also a healthy dose of progressive within Devourists sound. That is brought to the fore with the ethereal atmospheres around the dark melodies of the opening passages of “Nil” before the axe comes down in the form of a brutal, bloodcurdling opening vocal. Sinister and oppressing with a Black Metal vibe running through its core, it calls forth the apocalypse with some intricate arpeggios and short bursts of brutal fills and the staccato closing is very well executed. As a quartet, the band have made good use of guitar layering in the studio, “Forever Flies” having a few bright lead moments, while a spoken whisper segment is pure evil as the vocal fades out and then returns. The bleak lyrics are haunting “Eternal pain and suffering The sentence and the cost This oath to heed for man unrest Gaze at what you’ve lost” but the way they are delivered is vicious, Devourist being the kind of band who would climb from the grave to ensure that their will has been met, with grave consequences. If this is the seed, then the tree of Devourist will grow strong in years to come [7.5/10]
