Vs. Tuesday: Two Bands! One Song! Who Wins?! FIGHT! ZZ Top?!

There aren’t going to be many members of humanity over a certain age who don’t know who ZZ Top are. The Texas trio have a distinctive Blues Rock sound and a Beard and Stetson image has kept them in beers since 1969, with fifteen studio albums, four live albums and 44 singles to their collective names, including “Legs” and “Sharp Dressed Man” but the one in question for today’s head to head is “Just Got Paid“. That features on their sophomore album “Rio Grande Mud“, a title that was inspired by the river that forms the border between México and Texas.

Probably the most surprising band we’ve heard a ZZ Top cover from are Brazilian Thrash infused Death Metallers Torture Squad but the fact that vocalist Mayara Puertas steps aside, perhaps too embarrassed by the band playing “Just Got Paid” and they’re joined instead by Alex Camargo from fellow Brazilian Death Metallers Krisiun, which is just as strange. They’re in the Red Corner. In the Blue Corner we have Atlanta Georgia Progressive Stoner Metallers Mastodon which recorded their version for a compilation called “Covered: A Revolution In Sound” from Warner Bros Records. Curiously it doesn’t appear on their compilation “Medium Raraties“, which dropped in September, even though Metallica, The Flaming Lips and Feist covers do. Who wins? You decide!
