The Black Map #250: Treehouse from… Southampton (Summer Bash V Edition)
It’s Sunday and that can mean only one thing. Having spent the night before checking out some mad bands at a Camden Rocks Presents All Dayer headlined by Hardcore Injected Punk trio My Latest Failure, we’ve got ourselves home, found a fag packet somewhere and scribbled some notes on it about Summer Bash V. Now hungover and armed for the apocalypse with a pint of filter coffee and some Anadin Extra (other medications are available, none are as good) we’ve come to read said fag packet and it looks like the scribble of a one year old armed with a tattoo gun. So we’re making it up as we go along. Again. So much for planning. Reading Progressive Death Metal Kings Mercury’s Well (called such due to the number of times they’ve been called up to play the three wise men a school nativities) hold an annual party called Summer Bash and this year marks the 5th anniversary. There will be inflatables, Hawaiian shirts, flower necklaces, beer, grass skirts, coconuts and deck chairs. No, there won’t be any Eton Mess. Here’s the line up in full…
Tape It Shut
One Last Day
Black Emerald
Hundred Year Old Man

So who the f*** Treehouse are and why should you get your ass down to Summer Bash V to see them? Having witnessed them at last year’s incarnation of Summer Bash they’re an Emo band with a smattering of Post-Hardcore about them who offer catharsis as they run on themes of Mental Heath, desperation and worthlessness. Which seems a little strange as they love A Day To Remember but then their 2020 sophomore EP, released through Beth Shalom Records, is titled “Unappealing” so… Yeah. From that “Nurture” is the fans favourite and will no doubt find Mercury’s Well bassist Tiff on the stage for a sing-a-long moment in the chorus. Since then the band have dropped a double A side single (which is also available on cassette tape for all the hoarders out there) with Nu-Deathcore styled artwork. Recorded, Mixed and Mastered by Sam Allen and Alessandro Cogolo at Tidal Wave Recordings (Pluto Groove, Maisonette, Cutting Ties) it offers another seven minute burst with “Library Book Stamps” the most bizarrely titled song… Unless it’s a reference to the tramp stamp tattoo and the body count of those that wear it ?! Erm… Might need a psychologist to unravel that one.
