Exclusive Interview: Killerkorp talk writing and recording “Vices”!
In this second exclusive interview with Extreme Metal act Killerkorp, a band who specialise in Blackened Hardcore fused to a Death Metal skeleton, we talk once more about their recently unveiled sophomore EP in “Vices”. What really went on behind the scenes? What was their thought process going into the sessions? Do they like their Pizza with a beer on the side? The conversation went something like this…
How did your previous experiences writing and recording your 2019 debut EP “Pain” help to smooth the path of the new record? “With Vices we took our time to write and record every song, with Pain we had one stand out song and then we rushed our way through the songs to get the music out, we had no money at the time we skimped on recording costs. With Vices we invested more and as a result we got a better product. Investment and taking our time to write was the best thing for this release. Alot of love and care went into it”
How does the writing process of a new track start? Melody, riff or rhythm first? How does it evolve from there before you consider it the finished article? “It is the old school approach of the whole band being in the same room and jamming. Sometimes the riff comes first as the first building block, or someone will produce a whole arrangement in their own spaces. All the songs on Vices were a collaboration. The song is never fully finished, only stopped when we feel it is the right time for the song to end”
Even in the digital age, we still believe the first bite is with the eye so who was responsible for the cover work of “Vices” and what made you choose them? “We chose Rory of Graphic fix as his art style is beautiful and visceral at the same time, really capturing what we envisioned in the image, relating personally to our message we felt he truly put his own feelings into the artwork”
If you could have a guest on board next time around, who would you like to work with in the studio? “If we were to have a guest on a track, we would love to have one of our mates on there: Pat [Patryk Kolasa] from Existentialist or Jasper [Harmer] from Beyond Extinction. We are open to anyone jamming with us on a track”
For us gear nerds out there, can you tell us what you’re using gear wise (pedals, strings, drums etc) to get your sound? “From a guitar standpoint, Jakey is using a Pod go going into the power amp of an EVH III with his Ibanez rg921wbb – D’Addario NYXL 0.12 – 0.54 strings. Jon is using a Pod Go going into the power amp of a Peavey 6505 with ESP Horizon guitar – Elixir 7 string set used as 6 string set.”
What difference would it make to you if you could land an endorsement from a gear manufacturer? “It would not make a huge difference to us, but it would be a dream come true to work with our favourite companies as it would be awesome to rock their gear on stage and it would improve our sound massively, we would be so humbled as player to showcase”
“Vices” by Killerkorp is out now and you can find it everywhere you’d expect it to be
