Exclusive Interview: My Latest Failure talk Past, Present and Future (Part #1)!

2024 was different year for Hardcore injected Punk trio My Latest Failure, if for no other reason than they didn’t put out any new music. We caught up with mastermind, evil genius, vocalist and riff slinger Chris Underhill to talk about everything that could have, should have and did happen as well as the events of Christmas in the Underhill household for shits and giggles and the conversation went something like this…

We’ve all seen those matching Christmas Pajama family pictures on your socials, but what’s the festive season really like in the Chris Underhill household? “Haha, the Christmas Pajama thing is a new thing that we have done over the last few of Christmas. It’s kinda like, once you’ve started it you gotta keep it going. This year’s number was the Grinch which was chosen by my daughter, in fact she had been pointing it out since October. December is a busy month, Christmas completely takes over. Every weekend there is something festive going on, from Christmas Markets, meeting Santa, the Polar Express, the list goes on. Then there is the Elf of the shelf… for anyone who is considering this for their household be warned. I’m 4 years in and yeh, it’s hard work. Haha. It’s the bloody devil I tell you! The DEVIL! “

Returning to the stage after a bit of much needed R&R, 2024 saw you open for Colombian Immigrant Hardcore crew Firstline as well This Boys Fire and Trevor’s Head across three separate shows. What are your memories of those? “We didn’t play many shows this year but loved the ones we did. Our first show back was so memorable, it was one big party with our mates. Had all the usual suspects including We Punch Tigers and This Boys Fire. We actually headlined that night, and due to time restrictions we only had 20 minutes to play our 40 minute set. Dropped Disappointment and Bad Dreams then speed-balled the rest, it was My Latest Failure on steroids, hard and fast with no breaks. Don’t think I have ever played that fast before, haha.

Playing at the Dev was fantastic, really enjoyed myself. Atmosphere was great and the bands were on point. Firstline completely killed it, during their set my wife messaged me from the other side of the pit to tell me how good they were. Haha.

The Dev got so packed that there was hardly any room to store our gear. During Firstlines set some guy was standing on my guitar case, as you could imagine I had some choice words at the time. The pit was rocking so hard a pint of Guinness soaked the merch table, it was carnage. Talking of merch, we sold a lot of More Andy t-shirts that night for some reason. Camden loved More Andy.

The Cave was a classic MLF x WPT gig (even tho we were both support for Trevor’s Head) which had many laughs and many beers. The WPT boys are so much fun. What was memorable about this gig was my guitar set up. The venue didn’t have a guitar amp/cab and I have left my cab at home which is obviously a recipe for disaster. So for this gig my guitar head was hooked up to a bass cab. Let’s just say I won’t be doing that again. Haha.”

Bottle of Baileys and a Christmas movie on Christmas Eve? Do you have any family traditions in the festive season you’d care to share“I don’t like drinking Baileys straight, it’s too much like drinking milk which isn’t my thing but, I do love a shot or two in my hot chocolate. That’s a game changer!

It’s about spending time with my family, in December we book/do so much. This year we did Breakfast with Santa and The Polar Express. Christmas movies all December, Home Alone, The Christmas Chronicles, Die Hard.”

Rumor has it that after talking about it since lockdown you’ve finally been in the studio working on a pair of We Punch Tiger covers for a split EP with them? “Truth be told, we have been. We spent some time at Amersham Recording Studio’s recording a couple of We Punch Tiger covers. We ad free range to choose which ever songs we wanted to cover. I can confirm that one of the songs we covered was Costa Del Costa, but the other song we are keeping it close to our chest atm, not even We Punch Tigers know what the second song we covered is. It is was great fun tackling these songs and they sound awesome!! As it stands we wait for WPT to confirm that they have recorded a couple of our songs then we’ll set a date to release them into the world”

Is it straight to the presents at dawn’s crack or more of a Full English with a pint of Guinness at 11am kind of vibe at your place? “Straight down to business in the morning. Present opening is top priority, haha. It’s also the only day that is acceptable to drink in the am, kinda like the airport but in your own home”
