Review: “Cycle Of Violence” by DeadDue
“We worked together on this release, collectively. Each of us poured our creativity and heart into it. We wanted to encompass all our inspirations and favorite sub-genres. With this release, we wanted to give listeners the broadest musical spectrum possible and allow them to get to know us as creatively as possible.“ ~ DeadDue
Describing themselves simply as a Hardcore band from Warsaw Poland, DeadDue are a six piece unit who have been making music that point of fact covers a lot of territory. Before EP “Cycle Of Violence” landed, their prior works had included influences from Deathcore, Nu-Metal and even Polish Hip-Hop to give them a unique energy, filled with pure rage and rebellion. Vocalist duo Jakub “Żelu” Żelechowski and Aleksander “Madra” – Łyś are joined by guitarist duo Michał “Crackhead” Kafliński and Piotr “Smolson” Smolik with a rhythm section of drummer Filip Kawka and bassist Jan “Johnny” Nalborczyk leaving us intrigued about their latest burnt offering…
Riffs from the heavier end of Nu-Metalcore follow a creepy introduction the sixty eight seconds of “.fear.” unfolds, a tune that slaps hard before stopping on a dime when it could have easily gone on another verse or chorus. What it does do is open up the floor for Spencer Timmons of Californian Deathcore crew Saltwound to add a little stardust to “Vile“, his guttural vocal moments reaching bowel clenching levels during a tornado of percussive battery and a tidal wave of down-turned riffs. The band build a real sense of unease and a tension you can cut with a knife during this neck snapping call to the mosh pit, the couple of nuanced moments where the bass is given free reign making all the difference. The Hip-Hop element comes into play with vinyl scratching, programming, samples and rap screams in the potent “STFU” which feels like a bastardized throwback to 1999, jacked up on steroids and ready for war. Adrenaline fueled and hungry its designed to get a mosh pit into a frenzy pretty quickly and packs enough punch in the guitars to keep everyone happy.
“Make a Move” features the second guest vocal appearance with Maciej Grobelny of Kaozm and keeps the hip-hop beats firmly in place with an introduction, sample and more vinyl scratching before bringing the hammer down with the crunchy guitars. Rapid fire verses and galloping drums feel like breaking the speed of sound with their intensity before slowing down to some bloodcurdling screams and Deathcore power. The sonic equivalent to slamming down three cans of Monster back to back and then running headlong into traffic with a friend in a headlock, this is a party that doesn’t stop. Other energy drinks are of course available. There are some clean vocal parts in the chorus of “Die For Me” which feel like an attempt to demonstrate a little more maturity however they don’t fall flat due to great use of vocal layering to intertwine them with harsh screams. This is the one where a Counterparts like Melodic Metalcore influence bleeds out, the cleaner guitars giving it a melancholia while allowing for a vibrant solo. Whats interesting about it is that it doesn’t feel out of place or forced, especially when some more technical rhythms rise to the surface. Variety is the spice of life and this time around DeadDue have nailed that to perfection even before “Don’t Bring Roses To My Grave” plays out. Downtempo Deathcore brutality with eerie programming and gangland chemical beats add another dimension to that making you wonder just how far they can take their genre blending tendencies before friction starts to burn [7.5/10]
