Review: “Viewing The Invisible” by Corpsing (1st Anniversary)

Adorned by artwork from Gary Ronaldson (Benighted, Misery Index, Brujeria) and having been mixed and mastered by Edd Amos (Bangover, Goblin King, Mrtvi) at Warlock Studios, “Viewing The Invisible” is a fifth studio record by London Death Metal maestro’s Corpsing. If you count their 2004 demo and a pair of live albums then that’s eight in a quarter of a century of dominance that stretches back to the millennium with brothers Giuseppe and Mick Cutispoto masterminding the project. This time out the guitarist duo are joined by vocalist Levi “Leviathan” Jackson (Cythraul, Void), bassist James Cormack (UnCrowned, 10 Plagues) and drummer Subash Rana (Mechromorph, Narsamhaar, Kaal), as they continue to wage war on our skulls with themes of philosophy, hate and  decay…

An angry anthem of survival with a clenched fist “Be The Pack” features lead guitars from Jason Mendonca of Akercocke fame and finds Corpsing as blood thirsty as ever. A whirlwind of percussive battery and breakneck riffs slow into the mid section for an unhinged almost spoken word exposing yet more insanity but the band are just getting warmed up, breaking back into the brutality of the opening half in savage fashion. Full throttle, high caffeine and full fat, if this is your first exposure to Corpsing, be warned its going to knock you into next week. Blast beats and eerie riffs give “A Heart Works, A Heart Hurts” a churn and burn feel with Edd Amos deserving a lot of credit for nailing the mix. The guitars and drums sound huge, cutting their way through the ear drums like a maniac armed with a chain saw before “Soul Paralysis” finds Luc Lemay of Gorguts lending his throat. Curiously enough it’s not for a cameo either with the legendary front-man switching places with Leviathan to provide lead vocals throughout. As you might expect he sounds just as unhinged from the first note, like he’s being crushed by the sonic weight of the instrumental parts like its a tarmac compactor. It has to be said that the leads on this one rise to the surface with each repeated listen and are absolutely scorching as they cut against the brutal rhythm parts. It pays to expect the unexpected but the guitar strings being scratched by the picks to mimic vinyl scratching from a Nu-Metal DJ at the start of “Viewing The Invisible” takes a moment to get the head around. Once that passes however the title track is equally as neck snapping as what came before it, the band providing the soundscape for the march to hell with consummate ease. Corpsing capture their live energy perfectly on this one, seamlessly descending from speed and aggression to the slow crush of mid-tempo Death Groove as if it was nothing for a grand finale of epic proportions [8/10]
