Review: “Deeds of Horror” by Gorge

Where they found the time we’ll never know but it is written that multi instrumentalist and vocalist duo Edoardo Nicoloso (Fulci, Jorelia, TV-Crimes) and Roberto Sava (Jorelia) started new project Gorge in 2025. They did so with the desire to explore Death Metal in its most direct and uncompromising form, drawing inspiration from the raw energy of the genre’s early years while developing a personal and dynamic approach that they felt could also stand the test of time. Citing influences in bands like Suffocation, Dying Fetus and Malevolent Creation, the duo found what they were looking for by forging a path in Death Metal with a gritty Hardcore sensibility where the riff is treated as the single most important element…

Recorded, mixed and mastered by Davide Billia (Ural, Avulsed, Holycide) at MK2 Recording Studio this half an hour of power gets underway with the tornado of souls that is “Sacred Misconception“. A plague wind of savage vocals, insane breakneck percussion and tightly wound barbed riffs, the opening cut hits with the power of bands like Undeath or 200 Stab Wounds. Slam vocal parts and passages of rampaging Death Groove are incredible, the whammy bar drop hinting at some old school Thrash influences before the cut ends like a lethal dose of Italian hatred.  Inspired by psychological and metaphysical films such as Altered States and Jacob’s Ladder “Visions Before Dying” not only packs a sonic punch but also offers pause for thought once the neck snapping ends with its lyrical narrative.

In many ways Gorge do what they say they would but this is far from a simple, straightforward nostalgia trip. The pair’s attention to detail means that there are more twists and turns in each and every song than you’d find in a dime store horror novel. It’s like these songs have been written purposefully to keep you on the edge of the seat because you never know when the knife will rise and the killer will strike. Title track “Mortal Decimation (Deeds Of Horror)” slaps hard, the brutal Slam inspired vocal parts a gargling in blood that there is no return from. The energy, the atmosphere and the soundscape are darker than a cave dwelling and in this context its a thing of beauty.

It has to be said that while the drums are programmed throughout, they’re tastefully done rather than being locked in overdrive, so getting a drummer of flesh and bone for live performances is perfectly possible. Instrumental “Interlude” is a different kettle of fish with soaring majestic leads replacing the vocal brutality, something that works very well while also creating a tasteful sonic break so the second half of the album can inflict more cranial damage.

Angel Ochoa lends his throat to “Unhinged Punishment” something which almost feels like it gives Nicoloso and Sava a little more artistic freedom to experiment because they manage to squeeze more energy out of the material, all three vocalists making their presence felt. The early Suffocation and Dying Fetus influences are there for all to hear with Gorge cutting a path through the urban jungle with a machete, annihilating everything in their path in the process.

Increasing the intensity and providing covering fire with blast beats “Without Inheritance” provides yet more violent turbulence, the whammy bar moments sending a shiver down the spine as they howl like wolves. As with the golden age of Death Metal the riffs are awe inspiring. the duo never happy to settle for a churn and burn when they can do so much more. That means you can’t help but find yourself snapping your neck to their grooves, even on the first listen because quite frankly, they’re completely timeless.

There is a pomp and circumstance to the rise and fall of the thought provoking “Fear Of Losing Another Vital Limb” which could also have been called Apotemnophobia and the solo is an absolute face melter. Once again the duo spit blood and venom over the blistering non stop riffs, their endless pursuit of their vision of Death Metal a joy to behold. They’ve put every ounce of the weight of their experience into this and it shows. Once more with feeling Gorge bring out the dead, dying and damned with the smoking hot slab of brutality that is “Repetition Of The Kill“, a vicious grand finale for which they’ve saved some seriously impressive moments. They were never about to let this record conclude on a whimper and so bring their A game, beating the discerning listener to death with as many fireworks as they can pack into four minutes. Your ears will ring, you vision will blur and it will be worth every single second [8.5/10]
