5 Albums I Want To Be Buried With #39: The Cartographer!

Ever wondered about your favourite bands inspirations, influences or guilty pleasures when it comes to music? We certainly do! After reviewing their blistering new album “The Collapse Of A Bitter End“, we spoke to Derby Deathcore heavyweights The Cartographer about the albums they’d take with them to the afterlife and their selections are intriguing. If you missed their album, it’s one we highly recommend as the quintet use the dense brooding atmospherics, unhinged vocal tirades and weighty riffs to decimate the weak and thin the heard, all while seeking catharsis is the best possible way!

The premise is simple: “Back in ancient Egypt they believed that the items their Kings were buried with would travel with them into the afterlife and so part of the burial ritual would see the mummified bodies surrounded by chariots, gold and more. Fast forward to now. If there were five albums that you’d want buried in the coffin with you to take to the afterlife, what would you choose?”

Underoath – “Define the great line”

“The first time I heard this album I was in year 9 or 10. I’d been listening to Underoath since “They’re Only Chasing Saftey” but when this album released it blew me away, everything about it was just chaos in my teenage mind and I loved it. I always loved the way Spencer sounded too with his screams and listing back whilst writing this does make me understand exactly where I got my first inspirations from. It was hard pick out of their discography, but this one would be the one I’d like to be buried with.”

Nothing,Nowhere – “Ruiner”

“This album holds such a special place in my heart, it was the album that got me fully into Nothing, Nowhere after hearing him feature on All Is Lost by Getter. I listened to it on repeat, including the back catalogue he had already released at the time but this one is definitely coming with me in the ground.”

Nothing,Nowhere – “Dark Magic”

“I’m unapologetically a massive Nothing,Nowhere fan, his music has always connected with me that’s why there are 2 of his album….trust me, I’d take them all with me if I could. This one though, to put it bluntly helped me through so much, whether they was good or bad times. There truly isn’t a song on this album I don’t love.”

Getter – “Visceral”

“Yep, you guessed it. The album that I discovered Nothing, Nowhere on. Visceral is such a good listen if you’re a fan of electronic music. It’s super chill and at times can help to reflect on things. This album comes out when I’m feeling lethargic and down because it’s really does make my mood better! That won’t be much use in the ground… but it’s coming with me.”

The Used – “Lies For The Liars”

“Yes I was one of those kids and I can see the metal fans and my own band members getting to the end of this list, thinking “wtf jay”…..anyway, i absolutely love this album, front to back. Honestly, it was hard to pick between this or In Life and Death, but this just sent me on a massive nostalgia trip and unlocked so many memories from being young again when I listened back to decide, so it takes the win. The Used were such a staple of my youth, I can’t really say much more apart from I just loved them.”
