The Black Map #246: Exdestrier from Edinburgh!

It’s funny the difference changing a single letter can make in a word. Take the forthcoming record from Edinburgh natives Exdestrier as an example. Change one letter – an A for an E – and “Glorious Barbarism” becomes “Glorious Barberism“. In one letter change you’ve gone from a record about extreme cruelty and brutality, like grizzly public beheadings or being forced to eat snails to a record about someone who cuts men’s hair and shaves the occasion beard for a living. Both done gloriously.

A trio who feature in their ranks former members of The Exploited, Dragonforce and Razor Of Occam, their wide ranging influences and musical backgrounds from Doom to Extreme Metal, Hardcore Punk and Power Metal would leave you questioning what style they would make their own. Finding inspiration in lyrical themes of dark fantasy realms, tales of medieval landscapes, gruesome warriors and a looming gloom they chose Blackened Sludge Metal. Recorded by the band themselves in DIY or DIE fashion in their Edinburgh homeland, the record was before being mixed and mastered by Gwen Kerjan (Banane Metalik, Toward The Throne, Devoid) at Slab Sound Studio in France. It’s a debut that deserves the raising of a poison chalice in a toast to just how good it is. Pre-orders are available over at bandcamp.
