Track Review: “False Gods” by Tribe Of Ghosts

“With FALSE GODS, we wanted to create something that would simultaneously seduce and disturb. We wanted to play on the idea that not only do a ruling class acquire suffering for power, but they are aroused by it. Using the trojan horse of a pop-song structure, we want the listener to wrestle with their morality and give them the space to pour out their rage at the state of the world and the feelings of powerlessness under the political elite.” ~ Beccy Blaker, vocals

“We wanted to play with the idea of the band having their own ritual-esque scenes outside of the main performance, with a narrative that ultimately brought the two elements into the same world. The ‘antagonist’ characters work to torment and subdue the band which then contextualises the performance elements… that works to drive the story into the final act.” ~ Theodore Swaddling, music video director

Painting in patterns of light, shade and texture Tribe Of Ghosts are a collective who defy genres in order to create music as beautiful and angelic as it is dark and destructive. Roots in Industrial and Post Metal are soaked in those from a myriad of other genres giving them a sound has more plot twists than a dime store psychological thriller. Their latest virgin sacrifice is one called “False Gods” which brings to mind 90’s bands like Kidneytheives as vocalist Becky Blacker has a clean vocal that has a similar air to that of Free Dominguez. The programming giving the track a spine tingling edge before soundscape begins to contort, Adam Sedgewick’s brutal unclean vocal parts and crunchy guitars bursting forth like the alien from the stomach of John Hurt before fading into to the distance. Naturally that resurfaces as the track plays out, giving the cut something the edge of the seat was made for with a violent aggressive streak that is in perfect contrast to that of the angelic clean vocals of Blacker. An almost tribal beat swirls into play, wrapped in a breakdown section of pulverising groove as the lyrical narrative about a lust for power concludes with one final epic verse. Tribe Of Ghosts create music that stirs the soul, their ability to bring together opposing forces and make them sit well together in their sonic spectrum something that is truly unique. Complex and captivating this one continues the growth, confirming what we already knew. They have what it takes to create music that is also art in equal measure and have what it takes to take them to the upper echelons should their hearts desire [9/10]
