Throwback: “Cenotaph” by Bolt Thrower!

Released on 4th February 1991 via Earache Records, “War Master” is the third album from the almighty British Death Metal act Bolt Thrower. Recorded at Slaughterhouse Studios (which burnt down two weeks after the recordings were completed) with the legendary producer Colin Richardson (Machine Head, Fear Factory, Heaven Shall Burn) at the helm, this is one of those records that falls in the highly influential category. No doubt worshipped by American acts like Frozen Soul it set the standard for future bands to attain with its sheer brute force, stripping back the Grindcore elements but retaining that chaotic feel to some of the solos. Introducing a little more melody the Soldiers marched forward in a pure Death Metal fashion and would go on to remove the blast beats upon which drummer Andrew Whale had made his name with their next album. Adorned by cover art depicting Arnold Schwarzenegger as Conan the Barbarian, slicing and dicing his way through all enemies and 47 minutes of mayhem that everyone can enjoy. We’ve chosen the classic that isĀ “Cenotaph” for todays trip down the yellow brick road of nostalgia, a thematic continuation of “World Eater” from 1989’s predecessor “Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness”…
