Now you’ve read the memo, it’s time to get to the main event.
The premise is simple: “Back in ancient Egypt they believed that the items their Kings were buried with would travel with them into the afterlife and so part of the burial ritual would see the mummified bodies surrounded by chariots, gold and more. Fast forward to now. If there were five albums that you’d want buried in the coffin with you to take to the afterlife, what would you choose?”
For the first of edition of this new feature, singer and guitarist Luke Scrivens from Hidden Mothers has his say…
“Songs to Scream at The Sun” by Have Heart: “I wasn’t straight edge when I first heard this (though I’d say I am now), but I instantly knew it was special. As I got older, I realised how much I respected what this band stood for and the values they embed in their music. There’s just a kind of positivity emanating from what they do that makes me feel good. I really love this band.”
“Lost in the Sound of Separation” by Underoath: “Not really sure how I came across this record, but I was in my teenage years. I feel like it was a bit of a transition record at a time when my musical taste was dominated by cleaner bands and emo. There was just something about it that was accessible, but still with a real edge to it. Interestingly, all the Underoath fans I know never see this as the top record they’ve done, but it’s really special for me.”
“Beggars” by Thrice: “This is number one. If I had to take one, this would be it. I felt like before I heard this album, I think I had a pretty one dimensional view of heavy music. The kind of kind of bluesy, soulful take on post-hardcore on this album was so eye opening for me – it really changed how I viewed heavy music. Thrice are my favourite band of all time and this is my favourite record they’ve done.”
“Little Hell” by City and Colour: “This album has my wedding song on, so it’s special for that reason. Beyond that, I think there is something incredibly satisfying about this album, it has the thoughtful introspection of his first two records, but with a bit more bite in parts”
“When No Birds Sang” by Nothing and Full of Hell: “I can’t believe this came out so recently (in comparison to the other records at least). I feel like I’ve heard it so much. This is exactly what I love. It’s cathartic and punishing while still having atmosphere and melancholy. Best of both worlds in some ways, perfect choice for that reason.”
