Review: “Invicta” by Infected Dead
Its been nine long years since debut EP “Archaic Malevolence“, so it seems fair to admit that there was a time when it seemed almost impossible that any new material would emerge from Kent Technical Death Metal stalwarts Infected Dead. However the five piece, who feature in their ranks members known for prior convictions in Overthrown, Pupil Slicer and Venomous Outrage to name but a few, have re-grouped and return with “Invicta“. A continuation of themes orientated around the creations of H.P. Lovecraft and the world of cosmic horror, it was produced by V.Santura (Triptykon, Dark Fortress and Obscura) and is adorned by artwork from acclaimed artist Artem Grigoryev (Profound Lore, Nightbringer, Decipher)…
Conceived conceptually as far back as 2020, the record begins with the incredible “Astral Divination“, a cut which finds guitarists Chris Rahman and Alexander Brown decimating the weak. Blistering technical leads and staccato riff breaks that are beautifully interwoven into a pummelling rhythmic fabric, the solo from Brown a vibrant Progressive Death Metal monument that towers above all else. Throat splitting vocals from Lou Ede remain the fierce focal point but the fact you can comprehend all the lyrics is a crucial part of preceding, his grasp of storytelling masterful.
The second burnt offering of the record is “Organic Monolith“, a shorter and more intensely groove laden tune but also one that doesn’t deviate too far from the blueprint which sees the band get seriously expansive. It has to be said their nuances and attention to detail second to none, the complexity of these tracks making them gripping and immersive experiences with fantastic cohesive flow between them. A venomous little ditty of fire and brimstone “In Spaces Beyond” has arguably the finest kit performance from the legendary Scott Lindsay gracing it. He gives the likes of Kevin Talley or Kevin Foley a run for their money as Ede twists and contorts into a demon, his savage vocals equally as incredible on this one.
There is a point where Technical Death Metal can become as complex as classical music and with “Realm Of Ichor” the band reach that point, bringing so many elements into play that its a challenge for the brain to absorb everything that’s happening in one listen. There is so much depth and texture here that it beggars belief, from the bombastic bass line to the bursts of technical drumming and epic riffs, all of which fit together like a glove on the knife wielding hand of a psychopath. The only issue with this is that there isn’t enough of it as it leaves you crying out for more! [9/10]
