The Black Map #256: Hundred Year Old Man from Leeds! (Summer Bash V Edition)

It’s a long established fact that Saturday 22nd July 2023 will see the fifth incarnation of Summer Bash taking place at Reading Facebar, a one day event that will see no less than eleven (yes, you read that right, 11) bands taking to the stage courtesy of hosts and Progressive Death Metal masters Mercury’s Well. You’d never know that the venue is 7269-ish miles away from Hawaii as for the so themed beach party it will be decked out in beach inflatables, find everyone wearing Hawaiian shirts and lei (necklaces of flowers given in Hawaii) while sipping rum punch from coconuts. What more could you possibly want on a hot summers day? Here’s a list of the bands who will be trying to out do each other in getting the most people to spill their drinks on route to the mosh pit…

If you’re asking who the f*** Hundred Year Old Man are then there is a good chance you’ve been trapped in one of those underwater caves… like Cenote Taak Bi Ha in Mexico. Which if you’re going off grid, is a damn fine place to do it. The band are a twelve legged Post-Metal collective hailing from Leeds who paint Sludge Metal riffs with Post-Hardcore intensity and atmospheric reverie. Known for live show that uses theatrical dynamics with claustrophobia inducing sounds, dark mood inducing lighting, crushing riffs, samples and synths creating a wall of noise, they’re specialists in longer, captivating cuts of depth and texture. When it comes to Summer Bash, they’ll be armed for the apocalypse with last year’s “Sleep In Light“. That’s their sophomore album, the culmination of five years work and even includes the rarest of jewels, a drummer playing a Kazoo. Need we say anymore? You know it’s going to be a great time! If you’re still in doubt, we recommend you check out “I Caught A Glimpse Of Myself On Fire“, “Black Flame” or “Ascension“…
