Riff Police! Pull Over! #29: Trivium Vs Metallica!
Trivium bassist Paolo Gregoletto has long been one to trash the bands 2006 released 3rd album “The Crusade”. It’s one that many fans saw as something of a sonic departure for the Orlando, Florida Metallers despite having the same production duo at the helm in Jason Suecof and Matt Heafy as major label debut and sophomore release “Ascendancy”. “Unrepentant” is the only song on the album to have guitarist Corey Beaulieu listed as the sole music writer, the song itself a tale of Nazir Ahmad’s murder of his three daughters and stepdaughter.
Listen to the intro and also through the song and there are the inescapable thoughts of familiarity for anyone who has heard “Through The Never” from Metallica’s 1991 self titled release or as we prefer to call it “The Black Album”. Fans have long known that Trivium are Metallica fans and indeed the album as a whole sees Matt Heafy’s vocals taking up a very James Hetfield tone. Influenced? Without a doubt. Ripped off? That might be pushing it.
