Throwback: “Pierced From Within” by Suffocation!

The third album in 1995’s “Pierced From Within” from American Brutal Technical Death Metal pioneers Suffocation is one we’re going to talk about this fine day as we travel back from the 10th Anniversary of Tech-Fest where the band were originally lined up to play as a headliner. It’s the final album in their discography to feature guitarist Doug Cerrito and bassist Chris Richards and the only with drummer Doug Bohn. Recorded at the iconic Morrisound Recording in Tampa Florida cited as being crucial to the scene at that time and where everyone from Sepultura and Morbid Angel to Obituary to name but a few did their evil deeds, its one from the archive of when Roadrunner Records were a World Leader. That’s about as far from the snivelling wreck of a homeless alcoholic label they have become since telling out to the majors, losing all their staff and bands to Nuclear Blast, but we digress. The album is Technical Death Metal at it’s finest, full of instrumentals that pack plenty of punch and in the timeline of the band it shows growing maturity in song writing without losing any of that early ferocity. The bass solo at the start of “Depths of Depravity” is something really special. Here’s the title track, our recommended listen from this one if you’ve not had the pleasure over the past 28 years…
