The Black Map #278: Maziac (Summer Bash 666 Hell In Hawaii Edition)!

A red sky at night means that Hell In Hawaii approaches and the annual beach party at The Facebar in Reading hosted by Progressive Death Metal heroes Mercury’s Well is only getting bigger. If you don’t already know, this year’s sixth incarnation is only 48 days away, set to take place on 13th July and aside from Hawaiian shirts, flower necklaces and an array of inflatables there will be blood, sweat and spilled beers in the mosh pit. Here’s line up in full:

Wallowing (headliner)
A Night In The Abyss
Mercury’s Well
Them Bloody Kids
Maziac
Masquerader
El Chapo
Slug13
DeadBlow
Chaos Theory

Floating in the ether between Progressive and Alternative Metal are London three piece Maziac, a band for whom Hell In Hawaii offers the opportunity to play cuts from their summer releasing sophomore album “Test Of Time“. That drops on 28th June and thus far has given us the gifts of “Acid“, “Fear & Fortune” and “Stoic” by way of advanced singles, leaving us hungry for more.

As with their prior convictions, themes of self-reflection, observations of human tendencies, emotive experiences and overcoming adversity look like they run through the veins of the album once more as the trio expand their sonic horizons and build depth and texture. Hook laden softer moments are met by heavier sonic abrasions and dark synths as they push their boundaries in Post Metal. Whether they reach the summit of that mountain remains to be seen.

Having survived the 10th anniversary of Tech-Fest in 2023, the Maziac are keen to throw their bullets in the fire and risk it all once more, doing battle with a stacked line up that’s going to leave scorch marks in its wake and hoping to live to tell the tale. The only question is, will fans favourite “Permutations” remain in the set?
