Review: “Doomsday Profit” by Enquire Within
Recorded and mixed at The Joplin House with producer Dan Lucas (Pryma) and mastered by Dave Greenberg (Feed The Rhino), a third studio album from London Metal act Enquire Within has arrived in “Doomsday Profit“. Adorned by artwork from Very Metal Art (Tyketto, Skindred, Tailgunner), the record celebrates a decade of the bands existence during which they’ve performed at Hammerdown, Depravation and Hammerfest while sharing stages with Raging Speedhorn, Evile and Beyond Extinction to name but a few. Blurring the lines between Metalcore, Groove Metal and Traditional Heavy Metal drummer Henry Waller, bassist Erim Ahmet, guitarist duo Nik King and Daniel Lewin alongside vocalist Jacob Waller have long proven they can hold their own against anyone live but can they capture their live energy and commit it to tape once more?
Sludge Metal riffs bring “Doomsday Profit” to life with a familiar warmth before vocalist Jacob Waller begins his vicious tirade, pointing the fickle finger of fate at the naysayer who would dare cross him. His cleans are wonderfully rich, a welcome addition to the bark and bite of the whole the band wear their collective influences on their sleeves with some Trivium style riffs to enhance the oppressive atmospheric as the dark clouds swirl overhead. The interesting thing is the drum sound, which is on the raw side of things so you can hear every cymbal crash and double kick, as if it’s been purposely brought forward in the mix. Crossing borders and boundaries between multiple sub-genres “Crumble And Fall” has an urgency about it that makes you want to bang your head on the very first spin. A Traditional Heavy Metal chorus with male and female vocals intertwining works incredibly well, the surprise being the death growled moments as Jacob Waller tests his limits while pushing the envelope of the bands heavier side. “Scorched Earth” then offers up a piano introduction with ghostly, haunting qualities before diving headlong into pounding percussion and driving riffs. A tale of humanity living in a hell of its own creation unfolds with Thrash riffs in plentiful supply, the solo and rich clean vocal harmonies of the chorus both crowning glories as the hellish verses inflict their damage.
The momentum continues into the introspective lyrical narrative of “Hollow” as the band maintain their energy levels, firing Thrash fuelled riffs in all directions in the process. The chunky breakdown is a powerful moment before some tapping leads, the furious rage turning to meloncholia with a fleeting moment of piano as the song reaches an epic conclusion. The power and poise of “Rebellion” makes it essential listening, the gang chanted moments after the epic solo something which is going to go down extremely well live. Shoehorning in a perfectly timed false ending before bringing it back for another aggressive chorus that points to civil unrest is a masterstroke, the band demonstrating better song writing with years of dedication to craft. The story telling capabilities of Jacob Waller are second to none, “Blood And Rust” a tale of impending doom on Judgement Day as the world bursts into flames. A tasteful solo is nicely done in a song with such a potent chorus, the verve and swagger of the piece telling you just how much the band believe in the strength of their material.
A song with a more personal lyrical narrative “Shards Of Silence” has a wealth of sing-a-long moments that you simply can’t help but join in with, the raw edges of the verses meaning they have more impact. There is also a blistering melodic solo in this one that elevates it further and make no mistake you can see this one making an impact on American Hard Rock radio. Painting the white to grey “Sanctum” has bursts of blast beats and urgent riffs to accompany the harsh vocals, the clenched fist of refusing to give in central to the narrative and the energy electrifying. If you expected a power ballad or acoustic moment on this one then you’ll be sorely disappointed as “Hooks” continues the blend of Traditional Heavy Metal with Thrash and Groove in style, the lyrical narrative cleverly referencing the cover artwork of the bands debut album “Bloodlines“. The breakdown is bombastic and you can just see the band squeezing a little more energy out of this one when they play it live. All in all another vital record in the Enquire Within discography and one which leaves you wondering just how long it will be before they start playing in Europe [8/10]
