Live Review: Born Of Osiris w/Within Destruction, Aversions Crown and Larcenia Roe at Camden Underworld!

Our first gig review of 2026 finds us at the iconic Camden Underworld for a night of sonic oblivion at the bands of a band who we last witnessed back in 2023 as one of the headliners of the 10th Anniversary of UK Tech-Fest. That band is of course Born Of Osiris, an American Progressive Metalcore outfit from Chicago who released their seventh studio album “Through Shadows” via Sumerian Records last summer, shortly after announcing the departure of guitarist Lee McKinney. That hasn’t stopped them finding new recruits of course and tonights line up is seriously impressive with the American’s joined by the regenerated Aversions Crown who are obviously another big draw for this one…

There is so much gear on stage that there is barely enough room for American Brutal Slamming Deathcore quartet Larcenia Roe [9/10] but they don’t allow that to dampen their performance. Instead, after a hilarious sample about ensuring you brush your teeth twice a day they incite mosh pit violence with skull splitting opening cut “Teeth” before hammering through a set that also includes “Carolina Crowd Killer” and “Lip Split“. There is little or no encouragement required from the band for the audience to get involved with two steppers, a wall of death and a venue wide circle pit all occurring naturally during their high energy horror soaked performance. At the start three of the four musicians are wearing masks offering serial killer vibes, the spine juddering guitars and cymbal smashes bringing the boys to the yard only to hear the blood gargling vocal fury of Ryan Vail and question their sanity. He has a seriously impressive range to his voice, as he decimates the weak with everything from pig squealing slam parts to vicious death growls and the best part is that you can clearly see that loves every second. As an opening band they ensure they go out all guns blazing, leaving an impression on everyone in the venue as they do so. You might even call it sonic brain branding.

Australian Blackened Deathcore aficionados Aversions Crown [8/10] have been through more trials and tribulations than most but with Black Tongue vocalist Alex Teyen front and centre and a new EP in “Voices From The Outer Dark” everywhere that’s anywhere, this tour genuinely feels like a new dawn and a new day for them. The four piece rise to th occasion, tearing the audience limb from limb with a collection of science fiction horror based tunes in a career spanning set that gets the heads banging and the horns up. It almost goes without saying that the vocals are as fierce and fiery as you’d expect, a couple of haunting moments expanding on the adrenalized chug and jackhammer footwork on display. Does it feel weird that a Yorkshireman is fronting an Australian band? Not a bit of it and Teyen nails his parts with a powerful, menacing performance that proves the band were right to choose him. “Castigation Choir“, “Hollow Planet” and “Born in the Gutter” are all masterfully performed with down tuned eight string guitars inflicting serious damage on our craniums.

There is no denying that Within Destruction [6/10] are the odd ones out on tonights heavy hitting line up having transcended Deathcore to become a Nu-Metal tinged Metalcore band with cyberpunk synths. They pass up the opportunity to play any of their older material tonight, instead basing their set upon their last two albums with “No Way Out” from 2020’s “Yokai” the only deviation. The problem is that for whatever reason no one seems to realise that they’re suffering from a major technical issue tonight because the guitars from Howard Fang are virtually non existant; we can only just about hear them during a pair of solos and that’s about it. Its a real shame because vocally both Rok Rupnik and Fang are impressive performers but sonically other than Luka Vezzosi’s drums and Federico Ascari’s bass all we have is the backing track and that’s largely electronic with just a hint of rhythm guitar. From “Animetal” through “Toxic” to “Hide & Sick” the gang is all here and the crowd get excited, bouncing to the rumbling bass but it’s hard to get involved at a Metal show when a key instrument is so obviously missing.

Tonight’s headliners Born of Osiris [10/10] are welcomed to the stage like homecoming heroes and deliver a triumphant set of songs that reign supreme with DJent fueled polyrhythmic patterns and lush sweeping leads. The five piece give us an almost seventy minute long set as they play no less than sixteen songs from “Bow Down” to “Machine” with the holy trinity that is “Regenerate“, “Recreate” and “Devastate” played back to back in the middle of it all. If anyone hasn’t seen them since the departure of guitarist Lee McKinney then lets just say the void is ably filled by Threat Signal guitarist Travis Montgomery and his performance is electric. Every single song is a high energy skull crushing monster with the band offering no rest for the wicked in the pit with rhythm section of  Cameron Losch and Dan Marinaro inflicting serious damage. You can’t help but smile when vocalist Ronnie Canizaro calls 2021 single “Angel or Alien” a new song, tonight’s rendition a real stand out. The band have been through more than their fair share of musicians since they started out in 2003 but on tonight’s evidence they’re in the kind of rude health with this current line up that it bodes very well for their next album.
