Vs Tuesday: Two Bands! One Song! Who Wins?! FIGHT! Soundgarden.

The current situation between Kim Thayil, Matt Cameron and Ben Shepherd, the remaining members of Soundgarden and Chris Cornell’s Widow Vicky Cornell shouldn’t be allowed to overshadow the bands body of work or the life of the much missed Chris Cornell but as happened with Kurt Cobain in the wake of his death, it seems that legal issues threaten do that at a time when everyone should be pulling together. Back in 1994 Soundgarden wrote arguably their most important and influential album in “Superunknown“. Their fourth studio record of what would end up being just six, it was recorded at Bad Animal Studios in Seattle, which has since been renamed Studio X. It spawned five singles with “Black Hole Sun” being as important in music as “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana or “Down In A Hole” by Alice In Chains. The album has sold a staggering 9 million copies Worldwide with “The Day I Tried To Live” getting the full music video treatment with their instruments getting set on fire in classic style.

So to our head to head. In the Red Corner we have Atlanta Georgia Alternative Metallers Sevendust who have released a version of the song via label Rise Records with Lajon Witherspoon one of only a handful of vocalists who could be considered in the same breath as Chris Cornell. In the Blue Corner, we head back to 2006 and “Anatomy Of“, a covers album by Raleigh North Carolina’s finest Progressive Death Metallers Between The Buried And Me. A more contrasting pair of bands you will not be able to find. Who Wins? You decide!
