Riff Police! Pull Over! #133: The Myopia Condition Vs Dio!
Originally formed by guitarist Josh Gould and drummer Greg Glenn to commit to tape some ideas that had been running around Gould’s head for years, Alberta Canadians The Myopia Condition seriously impressed with their debut album “Event Horizon” in October 2020. Occupying Progressive Technical Death Metal territory and citing influences as wide ranging as Meshuggah, Lamb of God and Oh Sleeper the album is a diverse affair that leaves no stone unturned in its brutal nature. One of the more Groove Metal orientated tracks comes in the form of “Brainwashed” which sees vocalist Josiah Dyck crossing the black depths and reaching into Deathcore territory for something that grabs your attention and keeps you focused. There is however a sting in the tail of this scorpion; somehow between the trio of guitarists Josh Gould, Craig Mackenzie and David Luchenski who each put their moments into it, they’ve managed to include the riff from the Classic Metal staple “Holy Diver” by Dio. Recorded at Sound City in Los Angeles California in 1983 and released on the bands debut album of the same name, it went platinum in the US in 1989 and silver in the UK in 1986; it’s also a cut that 90% of guitarists out there would have learned from a guitar teacher in their early days. Ah, s*** happens and they’re phenomenal cuts.
