Review: “Immortal” by Inexorable

There have been some really interesting collaborations that have only really been possible in the internet age thanks to the ability to share files back and forth over great distances, something that would have only been possible via couriers and tapes in the time of bands like East West Blast Test who created brilliance with their self titled record as Veteran Grind musicians Dave Witte (Burnt by the Sun, Human Remains) and Chris Dodge (Spazz) did just that. Now the World is so much smaller and these collaborations are so much simpler and so they have enabled vocalist Matt Alleger and multi instrumentalist Dustin Smith to join forces in Inexorable taking inspiration from bands like Dying Fetus and Dimmu Borgir. True to that end, the artwork for their debut EP was created by @luna_marbh on IG while Mastering was done by JP of Just Art Dead @jpk_jad on IG…

…it has to be said that while no tapes were physically traded, the sound of Inexorable is very much one of the Death Metal tape trading era with the punchy opening cut “Immortal” reminiscent of bands like Frozen Soul or Incarceration with a raw and in your face aggression that sounds like it belongs on that format. The guitar tone of choice is crunchy and satisfying while the programmed drums sound as if Gene “The Atomic Clock” Hoglan played them, so could be easily replicated should the band ever want to take this project live, the cymbal hits on “Illusion” sounding a little bit flat which is the give away. Despite that, the cut itself is savagely good in an old School Death Metal way with a touch of Black Metal influence shinning through thanks to a choral bridge that works incredibly well as a foil for Alleger’s throat shredding tones. Those are clean enough that all the lyrics can be heard and given their nature, not needing a lyric sheet, a magnifying glass and the enigma machine to decode them is vital to enjoying them. A Death Metal cover of “California Uber Alles” by Dead Kennedys is perhaps a little clich√© in terms of concept at least but in terms of showcasing another side to what Inexorable have to offer, it works like a punch in the face. A fine debut EP which shows plenty of promise as well as being solid in its own right, forget about rehab and give us some more…¬†[7.5/10]
