Vs. Tuesday: Two Bands! One Song! Who Wins? Fight! “Do What You Want” by Bad Religion

Los Angeles Californian American Punk legends Bad Religion took their influences from 1970’s punk bands like The Ramones and The Clash while adding in that 1980’s hardcore influence of the likes of Black Flag. Perhaps overlooked at times, their influence is felt far and wide within the Metal community and deep diving into Religion and Politics in their music has inspired the likes of German Thrashers Kreator, Welsh post-hardcore crew Funeral For A Friend and even legendary punks in their own right, NOFX. Southern California punk’s The Offspring did their version of Bad Religion’s “Do What You Want” from their 1988 release “Suffer”, perhaps the album of biggest influence. It may seem a little bit inbred to hear a punk band cover a punk song, but hey, if it’s good, who cares?

More than a few eyebrows were raised when The Agony Scene decided to add a couple of punk covers to their 2007 release “Get Damned”, the only album they put out for Century Media. They picked “Do What You Want” alongside Dead Kennedys “Kill The Poor” and showcased those influences on their sound. After 11 years, the band released new album “Tormentor” via Outerloop Records last week – check out our review! Who Wins? You decide!
